The Rolex GMT was designed as an aviator watch. As in the 1940s and 50s flying distances got longer and the pilots travelled through multiple time zones, Pan Am asked Rolex in the 1950s to develop a watch which could tell different times simultaneously. The first GMT got produced in 1954 and got introduced with a fourth hand allowed the display of an additional time, with the corresponding numbermarkings on the outer bezel.
The history of Rolex goes back to 1905 where Hans Wilsdorf & Alfred Davis started to produce watches. In 1908 the registered the name Rolex, this is where the it all started. The quality of the watches quickly became known. In 1926 the started with the first waterproof watch ever made. Step by step, Rolex introduced new models that meet the highest specifications.
